Context
Rising ocean temperatures and ocean acidification have severely damaged the coral reefs of the Maldives. At Cocoa Island, efforts are underway to regenerate an ecosystem that is crucial for biodiversity, tourism, and fisheries.
Stakeholders and local partners
Who are the key stakeholders?
Objectives and approach
The project aims to restore the coral reef at Cocoa Island to strengthen marine biodiversity, reduce climate vulnerability, and support fisheries and tourism.
Objectives
The objectives are to restore degraded marine habitats, combat coral bleaching, and increase biological diversity. The project also aims to raise awareness among residents and visitors about the importance of marine conservation, turning them into active participants in ecosystem protection. Another goal is to provide new opportunities for sustainable development through responsible tourism and sustainable fisheries.
Approach
The approach combines on-site interventions with educational activities. Transplant techniques involve using metal structures anchored to the seabed, onto which coral fragments are attached. As they grow, these fragments expand, rebuilding complex habitats capable of supporting fish and invertebrates. In parallel, the project raises awareness among tourists and local communities through hands-on planting activities, environmental education programs, and online monitoring of progress. The integration of science and community participation fosters both ecological and social resilience.
