Context

India remains largely dependent on fossil fuels, and in rural areas millions rely on firewood for cooking and heating, resulting in significant environmental and health impacts.

India’s energy demand is growing rapidly, yet much of its power is still generated from coal, oil, and gas. In rural areas, around 900 million people rely on firewood, which emits more CO₂ than many other fuels. This combination contributes to worsening air quality and rising global greenhouse gas emissions. The Rajasthan region, with its vast desert areas and consistent winds, offers ideal conditions for wind energy production. The adoption of wind farms therefore provides a concrete solution both to reduce emissions and to promote local economic development.

Stakeholders and local partners

Who are the key stakeholders?

The project is developed by local renewable energy operators and supported through the purchase of green certificates by Green Future Project. Stakeholders include the Rajasthan government, local communities benefiting from improved infrastructure, local businesses gaining access to more affordable energy, and workers involved in the construction and maintenance of the turbines. The initiative is also linked to the international carbon credit market, which provides essential funding for the project’s implementation and long-term sustainability. Academic and institutional partnerships further help to disseminate knowledge and best practices to support India’s energy transition.

Objectives and approach

The project aims to generate clean energy from 26.4 MW of wind capacity, avoiding over 73,000 tons of CO₂ annually and supporting the sustainable development of the Rajasthan region.

Objectives
The main objectives are to avoid greenhouse gas emissions by replacing fossil fuel-based generation with renewable energy; supply approximately 50 GWh of sustainable electricity per year to the NEWE grid; support the development of local infrastructure and improve energy access for communities and businesses; create employment opportunities during construction and operation; contribute to diversifying India’s energy mix; and encourage future investments in renewables. In the long term, the project aims to strengthen the region’s climate and economic resilience.

Approach
The project involves the installation and operation of 33 Enercon E-53 turbines, with a total capacity of 26.4 MW. The electricity generated, approximately 50 GWh per year, is fed into the local grid, replacing energy from fossil fuel sources. Estimated avoided emissions exceed 73,000 tons of CO₂ annually. The project’s financial model is based on the sale of carbon credits. Beyond producing clean energy, the initiative stimulates the local economy through the development of roads, infrastructure, and related services, providing direct and lasting benefits to the community.
