Context

India faces a growing energy demand, still largely met by fossil fuels. Tamil Nadu, one of the country’s most industrialized states, is turning to wind power to reduce its dependence on coal.

The project is located in Tamil Nadu, a region characterized by high electricity demand and frequent grid imbalances. Traditionally, much of the energy comes from coal- and gas-fired power plants, resulting in high emissions of CO₂, SO₂, NO₂, and particulate matter. The wind project addresses two key needs: reducing dependence on depleting fossil fuels and sustainably meeting growing energy demand. With an installed capacity of 250 MW, the wind farm is expected to generate approximately 755,550 MWh per year, replacing energy from conventional sources and avoiding the emission of around 707,799 tCO₂e annually.

Who are the key stakeholders?

The project is promoted by Green Infra Renewable Energy Limited, a leading company in India’s renewable energy sector. Stakeholders include the Tamil Nadu government, the national renewable energy authority, local communities, and workers involved in construction and operations. Partnerships extend to wind technology providers, research institutes for environmental monitoring, and international carbon certification agencies. The project is also expected to have a direct positive impact on nearby communities, creating jobs and developing infrastructure such as roads and local power networks, which will improve connectivity and foster new economic opportunities.

Objectives and approach

Objectives
The main objectives of the project are to install a 250 MW wind farm; avoid approximately 707,799 tCO₂e emissions per year; help bridge the gap between electricity supply and demand in the state; promote technological development in the wind energy sector and attract new investments; improve air quality by reducing pollution from coal-fired power plants; create jobs and training opportunities for local communities; stimulate sustainable economic growth; and strengthen the region’s energy resilience.

Approach
The project involves the installation and operation of wind turbines with a total capacity of 250 MW. The electricity generated will be fed into the national grid, replacing the equivalent energy from fossil fuel power plants. The wind farm will be monitored using internationally recognized protocols (VCS) to certify avoided emissions. During both the construction and operation phases, best practice in environmental management and safety will be implemented to minimize the impact on the local area. In parallel, the project will invest in technical training, local infrastructure development, and awareness programs on the energy transition.
