Context

The project scope is to plant native tree species and protect the forest.

Yanacocha extends over 1,200ha and helps to protect some of the best and most accessible cloud forests in northern Ecuador. Since 2001, the reserve is owned, managed and conserved by Fundación Jocotoco. Yanacocha is just one hour away from Ecuador’s capital, Quito, at an elevation from 3200-4500m on the slopes of volcano Pichincha. The habitat is dominated by lush cloud forests, which diminishes in height with increasing altitude and transitions to the high Andean grasslands, known as páramo, at approx. 4000 m.

Who are the key stakeholders?

In order to block further deforestation and protect the threatened habitat we are working on a habitat restoration program that involves the reforestation of some pastures in the lower part of the reserve, as well as some high areas that were burned in past decades. This program includes the planting of thousands of young Polylepis trees and other native species.

Created to preserve the Black-breasted Puffleg hummingbird, as well as home to a variety of species, including the Andean Condor, Imperial Becasina, Gigante Picocono Spectacled Bear, Andean Wolf, Western Andean Coati, Andean Guanta, Dwarf Stag, Red Soye Deer, Spotted Tigrillo and Puma

To guarantee the restoration of the land and the preservation of the reserve Fundacion Jocotoco employees five times more park rangers per square kilometre than any other national park in Ecuador
