Context

The Russas-Valparaíso Reserve in Brazil is part of a vast Amazon rainforest corridor. The REDD+ project aims to halt Brasil deforestation, conserve habitats, and reduce millions of tons of CO₂e emissions.

Russas and Valparaíso protect approximately 170,000 hectares of the Brazilian Amazon rainforest, an area severely threatened by land conversion for pasture and agriculture. This zone is home to rare species such as jaguars and tapirs, as well as a rich and diverse flora. Without intervention, deforestation would have caused irreversible biodiversity loss and a significant increase in climate-altering emissions. The project applies the REDD+ methodology. Beyond its environmental impact, the project improves the lives of local communities by providing employment opportunities, educational and health services, and strengthens food security through sustainable agricultural practices.

Who are the key stakeholders?

Consulting the various stakeholders involved in carbon credit-certified projects is an essential step for proper project development. The Russas project is managed according to international standards that certify its emission reduction results. Amazonian communities actively participate in land management, working as forest guards and farmers using sustainable practices. Institutional and private partners provide financial support through the purchase of carbon credits, thereby supporting both forest conservation and socio-economic development. The project also collaborates with research institutions to monitor biodiversity and ecosystem health, integrating scientific data with traditional knowledge.

Objectives and approach

The goal of the project is to protect the Amazon rainforest in Russas and reduce climate-altering emissions by generating verifiable carbon credits through the international REDD+ program.

Objectives
The key objectives of the Russas-Valparaíso project are to conserve over 170,000 hectares of Amazon rainforest, to safeguard unique habitats, and to prevent the release of millions of tons of CO₂e. The project is committed to improving the livelihoods of local communities by providing alternative sustainable livelihoods, thereby reducing pressure on forest resources. Another key goal is to ensure transparency of the carbon credits generated, offering the market reliable tools for emissions offsetting. Additionally, the initiative aims to strengthen scientific research and ecological monitoring, ensuring that biodiversity in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest is preserved for the long term.

Approach
The approach adopted by the project is multi-level, combining technological, social, and economic tools. Local communities play an active role in the process: trained as rangers and farmers, they become stewards of the land.
